Attention: Engineering in France!

We are looking into introducing an exciting 2 week course in Chambéry, France in August 2011. The course would be designed to give Year 11 students (as of September 2010) a hands-on experience of the latest engineering techniques and company practices in France. It is likely to cover subjects such as solar power, hydro-electricity and low carbon aeronautical engineering. Teachers, Express Your Interest in STEM-in-a-Box!

STEM-in-a-Box is a new product designed to give teachers everything they need to run after-school club activities which develop 12-14 year olds creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

In small teams, the pupils will be challenged to work on design and build projects whilst learning in an environment which encourages self confidence and team spirit. There is also the opportunity for the students to use scientific ideas and models and to reflect critically on their work.

The kits contains everything needed to run the after-school club, from weekly lessons, presentations, handouts, materials to posters for display in their schools. The projects take six to eight weeks to build, so each one can be completed within a term. There is also an opportunity to extend the duration of the projects though exploration of subject areas and debate.

The first-STEM-in-a-Box available this September is the Propelled Glider. Other engaging kits are planned for release later this year.

STEM-in-a-Box starts at £160. To be one of the first to receive information on how you can take part please e-mail Emma on This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it with STEM-in-a-Box as the title or call 01926 333200.

Teachers, Express Your Interest in STEM Teacher Training!

This September we will be providing continuing professional development programmes to help teachers deliver STEM enrichment in their schools. These Teacher Training Days provide guidance on interesting and interactive projects that you can deliver to your pupils.

During the course of the day teachers are put into the same scenario as the students and are presented with the task of designing and building a wind turbine which is structually sound, cost effective and able to generate as much energy as possible.

At the end of the event, teachers will leave with a full list of resources and suppliers, a standard presentation, handouts for students and follow-up lessons to link each project with the maths and physics curriculum.

Could your organisation be a Smallpeice partner?

We are looking  to build new relationships with organisations that have an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). We can't operate without support from industry, so financial sponsorship of our residential courses or STEM Days is a great way of getting involved. We also look for role-model engineers to assist on our residential courses held across the UK.

By teaming up with The Smallpeice Trust, we are able to contribute towards your HR, CSR and PR agendas. To see what other partner's have to say, take a look at our video which includes footage from Jaguar Land Rover, National Nuclear Laboratory and Severn Trent Water amongst others.
