CyberFirst Defenders provides a valuable introduction to the tools, knowledge and skills required to build and protect small networks and personal devices. The course is designed to increase the awareness of young people around Cyber Security at the same time as equipping them with a set of relevant practical skills. Aimed at a diverse range of learners, it encourages 14 to 15 year-olds* to first engage in technology related qualifications and then to consider careers in the Cyber Security field.
*Students must be 14 or 15 years old (born between 1 September 2003 and 31 August 2004) on the first day of this course.
Each CyberFirst Defenders course aims to explore a basic understanding of Cyber defence through practical activities with tutor input based around personal security and home networks.
Session 1: Identifying the source and impact of common Cyber Security threats
This session focuses on introducing the students to the Internet of Things and exploring the devices commonly used in a home network. Students go on to set-up a home network and identify the security issues around the Internet of Things that can put themselves and their networks at risk.
Session 2: Defining and applying first line cyber defences
The focus of this session is on developing an understanding of good practice for securing commonly used operating systems. Students explore different password cracking software and different types of malware before learning how to protect their data by the use of secure passwords, and by applying permissions, rights and encryption.
Session 3: Constructing, configuring and securing a home network
In this session we look at networks and their function, common network hardware, and the different types of wireless technology and security used. We then explore how firewalls protect home networks from intrusion and explain the importance of encryption for secure data transmission.
Session 4: Managing and securing personal digital footprints
For this session, students learn about different web technologies, content and languages, and how scripts and cookies can be used to collect web browsing data and track online activity. Students are then introduced to different types of online fraud, how to avoid them and how to identify fake news on the internet.
