Years 8-12

Autonomous Vehicle Challenge

With driverless cars now becoming a reality after once being consigned to the pages of science-fiction, the world needs a new wave of engineers and programmers to design, build and programme the next generation of autonomous vehicles. In this challenge, students use Lego Mindstorms and iPads to build and programme their own vehicles which they have to navigate around a city without any human interaction, eventually programming their vehicles to react to emergencies and avoid pedestrians.

Topics covered include:
design, enterprise, programming, robotics, sensors, teamwork.

Curriculum areas covered:
Computing (KS3 & KS4) Mathematics (KS3) Science (KS3 & KS4) English (KS3 & KS4) Design & Technology (KS3) Engineering (KS3 & KS4)

Year 7-9

Smart Building Challenge

Energy and clean water supplies are 21st century engineering challenges. Students work in small teams of six to design and build a system to filter, collect, detect and pump collected rainwater as part of an integrated system on a new smart building. Students design and build a waterproof collection tank with a built-in filter. They will also need to assemble and solder an electronic water-detector and make a circuit for an electric pump to detect and then pump the water which has been collected.

Topics covered include:
electricity and circuits, forces, structures, soldering, water conservation.

Curriculum areas covered:
Mathematics (KS3) Science (KS3) English (KS3) Design & Technology (KS3) Engineering (KS3)

Speaker Challenge

A project that fuses practical STEM learning with business & enterprise, on this activity students will be tasked with designing and constructing a speaker that can amplify sound produced by an external device. In teams, students must solder the components onto an amplifier circuit board. They then must design a cabinet to house the components of the speaker; being as creative as they like but considering their target audience for the resell of the product as well as how to retain a good level of sound quality.

Topics covered include:
amplification and sound, creative design, electrical circuits, soldering

Curriculum areas covered:
