Meet Libby, 13 – she loves space and coding
"There are so many things about the world we don’t know and we won’t have our questions answered until we work them out for ourselves."
Libby, 13, was one of the wonderful young STEM enthusiasts we met on our Girls’ Engineering Experience course at the University of Warwick last Easter. Staying on campus in university accommodation, the students explored robotics, electrical engineering and clean energy; innovating solutions to real-world engineering problems and learning skills such as coding, soldering, programming, leadership and teamwork. Libby sat down with us to chat about what she had enjoyed the most and how it’s made her think about a future in STEM.
How did you hear about this course?Â
I’m here with my friend and her mum told us about the course. I think she had seen it advertising on Facebook. I was so excited to hear about the course and wanted to go.Â
What have you enjoyed the most about this course?
I’ve loved the coding the robots. I also learnt how to solder, which I’ve never done before, so that was a great new skill to learn.
Have you been inspired by it? Can you tell me how?
When we looked around the physics department it was really cool to see the jobs you could go into. I love space and it was amazing to walk around the planetarium.
How did you enjoy your stay at the university?
The accommodation is really good and so cool to be staying in the same rooms as the undergrads stay in. The canteen is really good and I like the way it’s all set out.
If you could sum up the course in three words, what would those words be?
Fun, interesting, exciting.
Are you more likely to become an engineer after attending this course? If so why?
More likely. It’s been amazing going around and seeing real life exploration. There’s so many things about the world we don’t know and we won’t have our questions answered until we work them out for ourselves.
What would you say to another student thinking of applying for a Smallpeice Trust residential course?
Definitely do it. It’s been a once in a lifetime experience.
