Our next story comes from Katie, who found out about our Engineering Experience courses from her teacher and, since attending, has started to see what a career in STEM could look like. Now studying Computer Science and Engineering for her GCSEs, Katie has started on an exciting path to becoming a future changemaker.
How did you first hear about The Smallpeice Trust or your course?
I first heard about the Smallpeice Trust in 2023 when I took part in the engineering residential course. I was informed about this course by my computer science teacher at school.
What was your favourite part of the experience?
I absolutely loved the experiences in which I took part in. In 2023, I was a part of the Engineering Residential course at Manchester University which was a great experience. I learnt a lot about computer and engineering which I am now taking at GCSE and intend to pursue as a career path. The course in general allowed me to learn about coding and computing alongside engineering a radio, soldering and different materials whilst experiencing a trip away from home and make memories and friends. The following year, I was invited back for the online version in which I got to meet more new people and engage in presentations, group work and independent work. I will never forget my experiences!
Did the course change how you think about engineering or your future? In what way?
Yes! This course made me realise exactly what I want to do in the future due to the in depth talks and opportunities I got. I don’t know how my career would look without this as before this experience I had no idea what I wanted to do.
Can you share a moment or experience that captures what The Smallpeice Trust is all about for you?
One moment I think sums up the whole experience is the video posted on the SmallPeice Trust YouTube which shows the natural environment in which we all experienced. I also think the evening entertainment on the residential course sums up the experience as there was always something to be doing and I feel this is how friendships were made. If I had the opportunity to go on another one of these courses, I 100% would!
With thanks to Katie taking the time to share her story – we wish her the best of luck for her future in STEM!
