Our buildings create 28% of global greenhouse gases. At a time when climate change is on everyone’s minds, we must design and build houses and cities more efficiently. With fun, interactive learning and exposure to leading academics, you will discover how the built environment can solve many of the climate challenges society faces. This course is for Year 10 in England and Wales, S4 in Scotland and Year 11 in Northern Ireland.

Supported by Birmingham City University with lectures delivered by expert academics at their impressive city centre campus, this course explores energy efficiency, sustainable place-making, active travel and inclusive neighbourhoods. Working together in teams with like-minded young people your age, you will devise solutions to the challenges ahead and improve your teamworking, communication and leadership skills.

For some students, attending a course is a difficult choice to make because of personal circumstances. The UK Government, working with Higher Education Institutions, aims to minimise or remove the barriers to under-represented or disadvantaged students attending university, and succeeding there. This course is free of charge to students who meet any of the following criteria:

- Eligible for Free Schools Meals (we will require evidence of eligibility);
- Have a disability;
- Are from an ethnic minority;
- Are from an area with comparatively low participation in higher education e.g. current postcode sits in the lowest 20% (check your postcode here);
- Are highlighted by the Government as being from another under-represented group, such as care-leavers or from the travelling community;
- First in family to go to Higher Education, i.e. no-one from their family has progressed to Higher Education. (By family, this could mean parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters).

What

This course will involve a series of engaging, academic-led workshops exploring how the homes we live in and the buildings that we work in add to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Solutions to these issues are being created every day, with engineers working to make our modern buildings increasingly eco-friendly. Learn about some of these exciting innovations and explore how these solutions can be incorporated into the homes that we live in.

Morning teaching sessions will be followed by practical exercises in the afternoons where you will get hands-on and work in teams to solve some of our most pressing modern-day problems.

Birmingham City University has a strong commitment to social mobility. To assist with this we would like all students from a widening participation background to attend this course free of charge.
